Trade in your old PC with TradeUps

Posted by greg on Jan 6, 2009 in Internet

picture-11I blogged ealier about HP offering to purchase your old hardware. I read up on it a bit and found that they, amoung other’s use a service called TradeUps. Pretty cool. They give you an online quote and provide you the shipping instructions to send it back to them. I guess its kinda a pain to package everything up and ship it, but if you want to de-clutter and get paid for it, this may be a viable option.

Warning - new phishing scam

Posted by greg on Jan 4, 2009 in Internet

picture-31There is a new phishing scam going around recently on facebook and twitter… the message tells you there’s a funny mention of you on a blog post and the link redirects to http://twitter.access-logins.com/login . Whatever you do… don’t login!

They also seem to have setup a facebook phishing page at http://facebook.access-logins.com too… so watch out and keep an extra eye on the address bar.

Although I have to admit, using the domain name access-logins.com for phishing scams is pretty amusing… he’s gonna access your logins!

Log me In!

Posted by greg on Jan 3, 2009 in Internet

Log me InHave you ever want to have remote access to your computer at home when your on the road? There are a couple of services out there such as gotomypc.com and Apple’s Back to My Mac (Mobile Me), but these cost money. Log Me In has a free product that has most, if not all the capabilities as the paid services offer. It is compatible with both Mac and PC.

Occasionally some of my customers will allow me remote access rather than having to travel across the country and to save project costs. I have used Log Me In and its worked great! Check it out. http://logmein.com

How to organize computer cables

Posted by greg on Jan 3, 2009 in Organization

Computer CablesIf your like most people, we have accumulated lots of computer, networking, video, telephone and stereo cables over the years. Most of the time they all end up in a box and when you need one, it always seems to be tangled up with all the other cables. Frustrating. I have tons of cables, and I needed a way to get a handle on these. I dreaded having to go down and hunt for a cable! It was easier for me to just go buy one than sift through a rats nest of twine. So one day I decided to take all of my cables at home and have organized them into ZipLock bags. It sure keeps them from getting lost and tangled and saved me a ton of money! Consequently in a related story, Circuit City is going out of business.

Seat GuruIf you ever travel, you will want to get the best seat on the airplane. Typically these are aisle seats at the exit row (sometimes) to towards the front of the airplane.  But each airline is different and each aircraft is different. Seat Guru is a website that you can go to and put in your travel information (Airline and Aircraft type) and it will show you the best possible seats.

The URL is http://seatguru.com.
