Google Docs

Posted by greg on Jan 27, 2009 in Internet, Organization, Productivity

picture-21I think Google is a great company. I mean really. Where would be today with out Google. Left at Yahoo or AltaVista for that sake.

I’ve been using Google’s Docs, and I’m loving it. For my work, I have to share a lot of Spreadsheets, Word Docs and sometimes Powerpoint Presentations. Versioning becomes an issue. Google Docs is great because it allows you to either upload an existing document or create a new one online and share it out other people that have a Google Doc account. You both can be logged in to your account and access the same doc from separate computers and literally see the changes being made live online.  Its sick. More recently, I tried hitting Google Docs from my iPhone and Google has a special site created just for mobile devices. I love it. I know Apple is attempting to compete with this product with their iWork solution, and I tested that too, but to be honest, its not at the same level of service Google offers. For one, its very iWork centric (Pages, Numbers, Keynote). Looks like they are going to $$ for it also. Google is free. There are limitations to Google, for instance they can only accept Word, Excell, Powerpoint, StarOffice, and a few other types of Docs. And two, there is a limitation on the size of document than can be uploaded. If they had a service that will allow me to buy more storage for my ‘documents’. I will gladly pay.

Great Service. You should try it out.

TinyURLHave you ever needed to send a website to some one and the web address is outrageously long? TinyURL can take any web address and shrink it down so that it is much more manageable. What is does is put an entry of the long URL and maps that to a new URL that they come up with and performs a HTTP redirection. Try it below:

Enter a long URL to make tiny:

Trade in your old PC with TradeUps

Posted by greg on Jan 6, 2009 in Internet

picture-11I blogged ealier about HP offering to purchase your old hardware. I read up on it a bit and found that they, amoung other’s use a service called TradeUps. Pretty cool. They give you an online quote and provide you the shipping instructions to send it back to them. I guess its kinda a pain to package everything up and ship it, but if you want to de-clutter and get paid for it, this may be a viable option.

Warning - new phishing scam

Posted by greg on Jan 4, 2009 in Internet

picture-31There is a new phishing scam going around recently on facebook and twitter… the message tells you there’s a funny mention of you on a blog post and the link redirects to http://twitter.access-logins.com/login . Whatever you do… don’t login!

They also seem to have setup a facebook phishing page at http://facebook.access-logins.com too… so watch out and keep an extra eye on the address bar.

Although I have to admit, using the domain name access-logins.com for phishing scams is pretty amusing… he’s gonna access your logins!

Log me In!

Posted by greg on Jan 3, 2009 in Internet

Log me InHave you ever want to have remote access to your computer at home when your on the road? There are a couple of services out there such as gotomypc.com and Apple’s Back to My Mac (Mobile Me), but these cost money. Log Me In has a free product that has most, if not all the capabilities as the paid services offer. It is compatible with both Mac and PC.

Occasionally some of my customers will allow me remote access rather than having to travel across the country and to save project costs. I have used Log Me In and its worked great! Check it out. http://logmein.com
